row2k Recap
The row2k Recap, Week of 3/28-4/3
April 5, 2022
row2k

row2k was on it all over again this week, from Seattle to Philly to London and at fully three separate venues in Jersey - here's your recap on what we saw, heard, and snapped.

Rowing from Above

As shown in the lead photo above, there is lots of cool overhead stuff in the Husky Open galleries, including some sweet scene stuff to end the day.

Best "Always Know Where the Camera Is" of the Week

Eagle v Osprey At Overpeck

While blasting back up to the start on 10' centers at Overpeck this week, two birds of prey got into it in front of the big blue Samsung building - the eagle definitely has the osprey in its talons, but it might also be that in fact they both have a hold on a fish, as eagles are well known for attempting to steal prey right from the clutches of other hunters. You can see the whole sequence here, which lasted less than a second.

Bummer Trend of the Week - Own Team's Times Only

Posting your team's own times only, no finish places is a confounding trend; you probably won't see "Kansas 72" anywhere this morning. It's a race, not an erg score!

This is a bit better--finish places reported, but you don't get the times:

This one seems just about right: times, finish places AND the names of the opponents. Swipe right to see this radical take on results reporting which, well, reports the whole story:

The Wake that (Nearly) Ate Wisco

Hands down the best "race condition" description for this week-but the Badgers survived to take the win.

Back-to-Back Photo Finishes? Must Be Lightweight Racing

The biggest Lightweight Men's event this side of the Eastern Sprints served up some hot racing, with both Varsity Eight flights in the morning serving up photo finishes to keep the Here Now folks busy:

First, Penn edged Harvard - then Princeton and host Columbia went to the camera as well.

Epic Victory Celebration? Must be the Dutch

Sure seems like regattas in Holland are just a bit more fun, and participatory. Might be time to just admit that the Dutch just do winning better.

Need a Logo?

Spotted in last Friday's 4/1 newsletter from Vespoli:

At press time, the lead bid was rumored to be 12 bucks and a case of IPA.

Need an Orange?

The stake boaters at St. Andrews don't mess around, except when they are messing around.

Lane 3 had a cannon for an arm, delivering oranges and granola bars with uncanny accuracy. You can see the whole sequence starting here (and for the record, Lane 2: you almost caught it... so close!)

Need an Eighth?

Racing "down south" in the Boston this weekend, Bates College had to hot-seat a few guys, which meant rowing up to the Basin from Riverside with eight oars, but only seven rowers:

According to our man on the Comm Ave Bridge: "They stuck the dude in there with 1 minute to go to race time, and won the race." How's that for gettin' it done?

Need, well, your own lane?

As you may have heard, there was some, ahem, lively steering at the world's oldest boat race without buoys: The Boat Race. Disqualifications are pretty rare in this granddaddy of fixtures, despite the sometimes constant umpiring exhortations, but you be the judge: A too much Cambridge on Oxford's station? Or all's fair on the Tideway?

Copying the Boat Race at Home, or... Best "You're In Our Lane" Side-Eye of the Week

From St Andrews's Regatta #2, the Whitman 4+ found themselves with some company when Lawrenceville's 4+ went walkabout:

Rumors & Hearsay from the Week That Was

  • Stanford's Women announced that they beat Cal at home which would seem big news for the squads ranked #5 and #2 respectively in last week's CRCA polls, but Cal's press release noted that this was a lower boat race between 3rd Varsities. The rest of the Stanford and Cal squads-their 1V, 2V and V4 crews-are both set to race in Las Vegas this coming weekend, though not against each other.
  • Story behind that Harvard Varsity which "Did Not Start" in the last race of the Lightweight Invite? Seems to have involved a bridge, near the start, that, um, got in their way and kept them from getting to the line.
